General Surgeons, Bariatric Surgeons, Bariatric Physicians, Primary Care Physicians, Pediatricians, Plastic Surgeons, Legal Professionals, Nurses, Hospital Administrators, Nutritionists, Dietitians, Psychologists, Behavioral Health Professionals, and other Allied Health Professionals interested in the medical and surgical advancements and management of clinically severe obesity.

This activity is designed to address the following core and team competencies: Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Teams & Teamwork, Interprofessional Collaboration, and Interprofessional Communication.


Physician Learning Objectives

Following the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe criteria for identification of appropriate surgical candidates
  • Describe the principles underlying a multidisciplinary approach to bariatric surgery
  • Discuss perioperative and postoperative care of obese patients
  • Explain diet and lifestyle changes after bariatric surgery
  • Describe the essentials of a successful bariatric program
  • Identify key risk management strategies
  • Discuss advanced issues in the surgical treatment of clinically severe obesity
  • Identify the components of metabolic syndrome and its relation to obesity
  • Discuss treatment path for severe type II diabetes and the impact of surgical intervention

Nurse Learning Objectives

Following the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the various nursing roles in a bariatric program
  • Identify key equipment and environmental needs of a bariatric program
  • Identify the challenges of the physical assessment with regard to the bariatric patient
  • Identify the nursing role as it relates to the multidisciplinary team
  • Identify the key components of bariatric documentation

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, CineMed is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Physicians

CineMed designates this live activity for 10.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s). Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.


Nurses

This activity provides 10.75 contact hours for nurses.


Dietitians

CineMed is a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Accredited Provider with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Registered dietitians (RDs) and dietetic technicians, registered (DTRs) will receive 10.75 continuing professional education units (CPEUs) for completion of this program.


Psychologists

CineMed is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. CineMed maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

CineMed designates this live activity for a maximum of 10.75 CE Credits. Participants should claim credit commensurate only with the extent of their participation of the activity.


Social Workers

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, CineMed, Inc. is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. CineMed, Inc. maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 10.75 intermediate continuing education credits.

Requirements for Successful Completion

To receive CE credit, participants must sign-in, attend all or a portion of the activity (at least 80%), and complete and submit the activity evaluation provided in the syllabus materials. Partial credit may be awarded for the portion of the activity attended.

Other healthcare professionals participating in this activity will receive completion certificates verifying that the activity was designated for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™.
